We reproduce below a further letter received by Tony Bennett on 9 August, sent by Carter-Ruck on 3 August, together with Tony's reply today (16 August). In the letter Tony deals with the distinction between libelling the McCanns, which may entitle them to take civil action to protect their reputation, and fair and reasonable discussion about the many queries raised by the reported disappearance of Madeleine McCann.
In our articles on this website we try very hard not to make direct accusations against the McCanns, but as Tony shows in his letter, the kinds of sharp contradictions in the statements of the McCanns and their 'Tapas 9' friends cast doubt on some of their accounts. Reproduction of their statements and reasonable discussion of them is not libelllous.
